Target Launcher (TL) & Ground Support trailer (GST)

The latest version of the UTSL Target Launcher (TL) is a robust, high performance and easy to use piece of equipment.  Based on non-corrosive aluminium alloy rails it uses maintenance free elastic bungee's to power the MSAT-500 NG Aerial Target above minimum launch speed.  The bungee's are charged by a heavy duty 24-volt electric winch.  The launcher incorporates several safety features including an engine/propeller safety guard, also there are two sets of separate safety catches that guarantee aircraft and launch shuttle security until the final shuttle release is commanded.  All launch functions are carried out remotely via electrical cables fitted with handheld controllers or by lanyard.

The launch rail is hinged in two places to allow road transportation and can be made ready within 10 minutes of arrival at an operations site and is operated and maintained by one Technician (EME).  A hydraulic ram allows launcher elevation to optimum air vehicle launch angle.  A water proof cover is provided for transport and when storage is required outside.

There are no running costs except for simple annual maintenance and will launch MSAT-500 NG in all typical conditions.  There are no hazardous equipment or special procedures as there are with JATO/Rocket booster type launch systems.

To facilitate lifting by crane for Naval operations, a lifting eye is fixed to each corner of the trailer together with guide brackets on the chassis when using webbing strops.  High performance road lighting and reflectors are fitted.  A cable operated overrun braking system is fitted together with four drop down legs for trailer support during target operations.  Additional wheel chocks are also supplied for trailer support during target launch.

The Ground Support Trailer (GST) is manufactured with substantial steel box section, with cladding used for all panelling and storage compartments, particular attention is paid to prevent the ingress of sand and water.  It is fitted with maintenance free independent suspension systems, wheels and tires are based on standard Land Rover specification.  Up to three MSAT-500 NG Aerial Targets can be stored and transported in the GST together with the necessary operating equipment.  There are several lockable storage compartments all fitted with robust hinges and locks.  The top surface is fitted with climbing handles and a non-slip walking surface is applied to the top surface.

The launcher is securely mounted to the trailer and can be set from transportation position to launch position with minimum manpower utilising a simple hydraulic ram.  The launcher winch batteries are fitted inside the body for security.  Brackets are fitted for the correct storage of all cables, antennas etc.  A fuel storage tank is fitted with both electric and manual fuelling systems.  A trailer tool kit is supplied as standard and a fire extinguisher is also fitted inside the storage compartment.

Both the Target Launcher and Ground Support Trailer are in service with overseas and United Kingdom customers.
